We use to visit Aunt Maxine and Uncle Dwain in the summer months. One time when I was a teenager at their place, I had Trent on my knee and was bouncing him up and down and started singing a somewhat popular rock song from that time period. I added Trent's name to it for fun. Aunt Maxine heard me, and said, that is a bad song. Though I hadn't been thinking too much about it, I knew she was right, and stopped singing it. Elder Marvin J. Ashton said, "“How forcible are right words!” (Job 6:25.) Yes, how forcible are right words shared at the right moment with the right person." (Family Communications -- April Conference 1976) I appreciate her being willing to stand for truth and righteousness.

I remember the kindness that Aunt Maxine and Uncle Dwain showed me when we visited them as a group of young adults. We went rafting down the river near Dutch John as a BYU young adult ward. Wes was a member of that ward, and had us stop at his Mom and Dad's place in vernal for some reason. Our whole group did stop, I think there were probably about 25-30 of us. They had home made ice cream, and birthday cake for us. It just happened to be July 15th, my birthday. I was so shocked by it, and was touched by them remembering it, and by their kindness.

Aunt Maxine has been very dear to me ever since the summer I stayed with their family in Ely, Nevada. My mom sent me to be a help to her during her difficult pregnancy with JaLynn. Being a typical teenager, I'm not sure how much help I was to her. But she was infinitely kind to me, even in her own time of need. I was inspired by the kindness and love shared between my aunt and uncle, and held them in my heart as people to emulate in my own marriage and family. I can testify to her amazing bread and cinnamon rolls, and more. I learned a lot about both, and more culinary skills, while living with their family that summer. Not mastery, but an important beginning for me (up to that point, my culinary skills had included making popcorn and punch). I was privileged to live close enough to visit them often, in the last years that she lived in Vernal, and also in the last few months of her life. At every juncture she gave me so much in kindness and concern, and in example of a loving life, well lived. I am so grateful for having known her, for so many years. I am grateful also, to know she is living now in love and peace, with her beloved Dwain.

It is with a heavy heart that I would like to offer the Nelson family my deepest condolences for the lost of your beautiful mother Maxine. May your hearts find peace in knowing that her life here upon this earth was a gift to all of us.
I personally know of her many gifts that include her unconditional love and compassion and I will never forget her words of advice and her continuing support within my life.
You should all be so proud to have been blessed with such a beautiful soul as your mother, knowing that her teachings are the building blocks of your own hearts. You have all been given the greatest gift of love that this world has ever known and now she has found her final rest within the arms of your father. What a beautiful reunion this must have been and for now, two become one, as eternal bliss.
May her memories and ideas forever be a part of your soul as her magic lives on within all of you. It is my prayer that you will embrace each other during this time to find peace as you mourn. I am sure that your mother would love to see her eternal family locked within arms, to bid her a final farewell.
Peace Be Unto Your Souls,
Dean Harper
