Kathleen and family, When I looked at the newspaper today and saw the announcement of Eddie’s passing, I was immediately taken back to when Sue and I returned to Manila over 40 years ago to raise our family. Oh, what memories. ... And then I thought about you and your loss. Oh how we wish that we could be near and share this moment with you. But Sue and I are thousands of miles away and that great distance only adds to the sorrow that we feel. We will never experience greater joy and happiness, nor are we ever more vulnerable to pain, sadness and sorrow, than when we are in the bonds of love! AND everything that is within the family, even this Gospel of Jesus Christ, the great plan of happiness, is within the bonds of love and charity. We wish we could comfort you as you have so often comforted us. Your talent, your friendship and your faith have always been there in our lives. Please understand that we love you and we feel your loss and our separation at this time. I have come to realize that the love we hold back is the only pain which will truly follow us into eternity. When Jesus balances the great scale of your life, I promise you that your heart will be filled with the love, peace and comfort, that you so richly deserve, because of all the love, peace and comfort that you have given to others. Yes, life is a journey filled with comings and goings; arrivals and departures; greetings and goodbyes; unions and reunions. When you think about it, saying hello and introducing ourselves or saying goodbye and consoling ourselves, makes up the most notable events in our mortal lives: births and deaths. Notice how greetings are filled with joy, happiness and anticipation, while saying goodbyes are filled with tears, emptiness and sorrows. If a life is filled with greetings, it is a life filled with associations, community and gatherings, but oh how trying are the times of saying goodbye. And the only true comfort in our times of separation is if we know that these breaches will be temporary and hopefully brief. Kathleen, we love you and your family.
