As a substitute teacher I saw Dan every day as a remover of snow (with shovel at breakneck speed), a crossing guard, a greeter at all arriving buses, and a visitor at every classroom in the school at least once a day. Always upbeat and respectful of everyone. The absolute model of a school principal, and manhood in general. To know Dan Bergman was truly to love him.

Dan was an incredible person--truly one of a kind. He worked tirelessly to build a more dynamic and inclusive community at Emerson, and he succeeded. He filled the halls with a sense of fun, created a place where everyone felt known and welcome, and inspired all of us, I think, to be more engaged and kind. We'll remember him always -- and have his family in our hearts.

A great example of Lidership is gone! But he leave us the responsibility of preserve his legacy. Like a month before school year ended we knew he'll not be a principal at Emerson any more, We all were devastated, but he was really depress, Emerson was his "masterpiece", it was high rated academically, he knows every kid by name, he loves Latino Parents, every person how enter to that building feels like been in their own home and there was much projects over the table. By the end of school year he did turn over the "tortilla", he was very exited about this new challenge in his life. We have much more to learn from he!
I want to thank his lovely family for share your Son, Brother, Husband and Dad with Me and my family.

I was attending Emerson Elementary when he started working there. He was by far the best principal I have ever had and I know how important his influence was on the whole school. He knew every kid by name and when you wanted to talk to him, there was always a line of doting students waiting to hug him. He was such a fun loving guy and improved Emerson Elementary noticeably. I will miss his can-do attitude and big personality. The Bergman family is in my thoughts.

Jamie,
I don't know you, but hearing about your husband touched my heart. He sounded like a very special man. I lost my husband suddenly in a car accident, nearly 11 years ago. I had 4 sons and was pregnant with my 5th. I just want you to know that it will be hard, but you will be okay. Your husband will watch over you and your children. Allow his example and all the good memories to sustain you. You will all be in our prayers.

I had the good fortune to work with Dan for the last three years, and he had this way about him that made people feel like he was always their friend. He was such an inspiration, and I loved the enthusiasm he had for life. When I first met him, I could tell everyone loved and respected him, and as I got to know him through our work, it became immediately clear as to why. Words can't express how deeply sorry I am for your loss, our loss, the world's loss. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. He certainly left his mark in the world and in our hearts. What a privilege it was to know and work with him. My deepest and most sincere condolences.

When I first met Dan, I was walking with 2 of my children by his home, inside these giant 11 feet tall pipes that were being installed to replace an irrigation canal. We were down in these big steal pipes, tossing rocks, and listening to the ping they made. He came down into the pipes to see what the noise was coming from. I first thought that I was bugging him by tossing these rocks. I wasn't sure what his response would be. He listened to my explanation and then said "I'll be right back". After several minutes, he returned with a hand full of bottle rockets. I thought "what is he thinking?". Next thing I knew, he was lighting them and shooting them down the pipes, into the dark and they would explode with an amazing crack! I thought, "this is one fun guy to be around". Dan will be missed! Dan was fun and exciting! Thanks Dan for just being a kid with us that day!

Dear Jamie, Mason, Weston, Layla, and other members of the Bergman Family:
I am incredibly saddened by Dan's loss. It has been a privilege to have worked with him at the District for these past 9 years. I will miss his energy, spirit and intelligence. Every time we worked on something together, I was always jealous that I had never had a Principal like Dan! I also loved his sense of humor. He had a quick, self deprecating wit and he always made me laugh. But what always shone through was his genuine love for and commitment to the kids. The world has lost someone very special, but the memory of Dan Bergman will be eternal.

I was called into Mr. Bergman's office countless times, although I wasn't one of his students. My son Kedarhi attended Emerson for several years. what I learned about Dan is that he genuinely cared about all of his students. When I learned that Dan was the Principal at Edison Elementary I was really exited as my daughter was entering as a new student at Edison. The day I registered my daughter for school, Kedarhi was able to see Mr. Bergman, and talk with him. Kedarhi, and I send our prayers, and love to Mr. Bergman, and his family. I knew Dan for less than a month, as he had just hired me at Edison Elementary in my first certified teaching position. He changed my life in that one action, and I will forever be grateful to him.
I was so looking forward to working with Dan, and am truly devastated at this incredible loss. However, in the short amount of time I knew him, he made a huge impact on me. He showed how much an administrator can care and bring love and fun into a school. I will miss him deeply, but I am proud to say he has left a love of education and wild spirit that will continue on with me and many others.

Bless you and your family, Dan. We're all going to miss you. The three years we worked together were amazing. I loved seeing you long board down the halls after school, giving kids high fives as you went along. The kids loved you so much, they would even brag to me, "Mr. Bergman have me a high five WHILE he was skateboarding in the hall!"
You truly touched so many lives. The world has lost a great man, one of the greatest I've ever met. I've actually raved about what an amazing principal and person you are, to so many people. I told a few that Dan Bergman died, and they all knew exactly who you were, and all were upset. That's the mark of a great man- when people who've never even met you respect and look up to you, who shed tears over your passing. I'm praying for you- and especially for your family, and for all of the people left mourning in your wake. Thank you for everything you did, and everything you were. Thank you for bringing sunshine into the world; for making the world a better place to live in. May you rest in peace.

Mr. Bergman was only my principal for two years while I was at Emerson Elementary, but those were my favorite years. He was always there for you, no matter what. People don;t have an obligation to be nice, you know? But he always was, always going above and beyond to make sure our school was as good as it could be. When I first heard the news, I didn't believe it because firstly, I thought he was invincible, and secondly people aren't supposed to just die. Especially not good people, young people, people who have so much more life than they could ever use. It's not fair.
I'll remember him because he remembered me. When I moved on to middle school, I would come visit and he would always greet me by name with a hug and a smile. He remembered my birthday two years after I left. And he didn't have to, but he did. I'm so angry that this happened, and I honestly have nothing to say to make it better. He's just gonna be missed, and that's it.

I am still in shock, and literally shuddering here thinking of this. Most of all, I want to say thank you. You have had such an amazing impact on the lives of my children, James and Libby Reeser. They are in awe of you, and remain that way. You touched their lives and inspired them in ways that I could only hope to. I could rest easy knowing our kids were cared for by someone who truly loved them, and the kids went to school all excited to see Mr. B every day! Whether rain or shine, I would drive up to Emerson several rainy and snowy morning to see you out front sopping wet, helping the kids inside. God Bless you Mr. Bergman, for everything you've done, for the lives you touched and made better, simply by being here and being here for these kids. My heart aches for your amazing family, and for the years of kids to come who won't get to benefit from having you in your lives. RIP and know that you are truly missed, that there is a whole in our hearts that will never be filled. My kids made a painting for you. In the middle of it were those words they were so wanting to hear again. "Keep on truckin!" Libby said they knew you were having a bad day because you didn't say it. Libby told me Friday night she wouldn't say it. Love to you and yours and thank you for everything you've ever done for us.

Jamie - Please know that we are here for you and your family in any and every way. I am so overcome with sympathy, sadness, and laughter of such great, fond memories with you and Dan, and your family. We never express all that we should, all that we feel for those we love while they are here with us. Words CANNOT express alone, but I just have to do my best to share a little about Dan, with him, and with you, here in my heart while I type.
Danny,
So much I never said, and am at such a loss. I have wonderful memories of our time together as teammates, friends, and hunting buddies during our time as Huskers. You charmed everyone with your infectious passion for living and embraced every moment to make whoever you were with feel important, valued, loved, and sometimes embarrassed with your airport serenades and springboard flipping conversations. All done to show your fun-loving approach to life and relationships, but always done to make our day, challenge us, and show your own genuine love for us. You were a force of positive energy, enthusiasm, and laughter. One that could not be ignored and will never be forgotten. I regret we let our family trips to Yellowstone and the Tetons dwindle away over the years as we devoted ourselves to our own families - personal and professional. Our conversations of teaching turned to the principalship as we paralleled each other in our pursuits to impact lives of others. I'm so proud and honored to have been your friend over the years, your teammate, and even a distant colleague. I love you my friend! I will think of our crazy adventures together every time bird season opens, when I drive into the mountains of Yellowstone, or see someone carrying a guitar through an airport - always with a smile on my face, a warm memory in my heart, and a tear in my eye. So long, Danny. I love you, buddy.

Dan Bergman was truly the greatest teacher I have ever had. I had given up on school before I met Dan, but that changed less than a week into being his student. He showed me how much potential I have and challenged me to reach for it. I will always keep countless memories with me, like how he would literally do back flips when his class would achieve an accomplishment. When he would take us to a nearby park for gym class was some my best times throughout high school. He would invite us to try and tackle him if we could keep up with him, I still don't think anyone caught him though. His positive, hyper, energy made everyone want to be in his classes at Horizonte. It was that great energy that turned many of his students lives around. He helped me realize what I wanted from life and I will never forget him for installing that in me. I looked up to Dan in a lot of ways, like a hero. I wish to leave the same type of impact that he made on so many people. My condolences go out to your family, may your soul rest in peace Dan, you truly inspired your students. P.s. Greatest Ultimate Frisbee player ever!

We both worked with Dan: James at Horizonte and Shannon through the district. At Horizonte, Dan was so present with the difficult kids. he was great at disarming conflict, as well as being an excellent teacher. We were so excited when he decided to get his Ed Admin degree because he could touch so many more lives as an administrator. He had an excellent reputation as a gifted principal at the district level. Emerson will grieve him deeply; and Edison will not know what they missed out on. As coworkers we all appreciated his fun loving sense of humor and incredible sense of fair play. We will be out of town for the funeral, so wanted to tell you how incredibly sorry we are for you and the kids. All our thoughts and prayers are with you in the coming months.
