Obituary of Melroy Edwin Smith
Melroy Edwin Smith “Ed” of American Fork, UT passed away peacefully in his home after a long illness.
Ed was born January 25, 1931 to Melroy Smith and Lola Belle Dunford in Logan, UT. He was the second eldest of 4 children. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, his sister Geraldine, and his wife, Peggy Marlene Jensen Smith of 45 years. He is survived by: his now wife Lae Lonnie Edith Taylor Smith of 22 years, his children Michael (Robin) Smith of Atlanta, GA, Sena (Michael) Hoodman of Huntington Beach, CA, and Angela (Phil) Barber of Kalamazoo, MI, his grandchildren Tyler Smithson and Bradly Smithson from Salt Lake City, UT, Maria Shiloh (Nate, MD) Averill of Daniel Island, SC, 7 step children, their spouses, and 89 grand and great-grandchildren, his sister Connie (Kent) Worthington, his brother Sidney (Ann) Smith, and many nieces and nephews, whom all love him.
Ed, and Eagle Scout, graduated from Utah State University where he belonged to the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was called to serve an LDS Mission but was then released from his calling to serve in the United States Navy where he served for 4 years until he was honorably discharged in September 1954. Ed held numerous positions in personnel management and as a recruiter in his working career in various aerospace and computer companies in Utah and Southern California. Ed and Lonnie moved from So. Calif. in 2014 to American Fork, UT.
Ed will be remembered by his friends and family for his gift of turning an ordinary day into a special one full of life. He loved snow skiing, working in his garden, and especially his wife, Lonnie. In fact he and Lonnie were inseparable except when he would take long walks for miles and miles almost every day, year after year. The walks were his time for him to think and enjoy the world around him. He would stop and visit with everyone along the way. His Utah State University hat that he always wore would attract people and conversation. During his walks he would also call and talk with his children and grandchildren to keep in touch. He enjoyed quaking at the ducks in the park and they would follow him along the way. He only regretted quaking at the geese because they would chase him.
Ed and Lonnie loved serving as ordinance workers in the Los Angeles and Newport Beach LDS temples for a consecutive 17 years.
Funeral services that will celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 am at the American Fork Stake Center, 688 W 500 N American Fork, UT. A viewing will also be held from 9:45-10:45 am prior to the services.
