A letter we gave to Brent on his last Birthday... Brent: Our first instinct was to get you a Home Depot gift card!!! Somehow that just didn't seem adequate. What we really wanted to give you for your birthday money can't buy. We wanted you to know how much we love and appreciate our friendship with you and Sonya. We have only known each other for 4 or 5 years, but it feels like we have known you our whole life. In that short span we have grown to love you as a true friend. Being around you we see a good husband, good father, and grandfather. We see a good man who honors his priesthood. We see a wonderful neighbor who always is thinking of others needs before his own. We see a friend that has endured his trials with such courage and determination, never complaining, always moving forward. In you, our friend, we see a true disciple of Jesus Christ. So as we celebrate your birthday may we say thank you for your example and your kindness to us. We love you our dear Brent. May the Lord continue to bless you and your sweet Sonya. Dear Sonya, Although I knew Brent's condition was serious, after seeing you last summer and after receiving your Christmas card, I thought he had a few years more, not a few months. 59 years together is only a drop in the bucket compared to the eternity you face. You have my heart right now, as I offer you my sympathy and my friendship of almost 70 years. You and Brent are among my most cherished memories and I love, love, love you. My best to you as you adjust to a life without him. You are such an example to me of devotion in marriage. I so wish I could attend his funeral. I will contact you this summer when I arrive, around the first week in July. Sending so much love, Shannon
