This is some sad news. John was such a wonderful man, and friend. I had the privilege of serving with John in the Mt. Timpanogos LESS Temple when I was a missionary there. John was always very fun, very positive, and very gentle. He was also very amusing as he had a very fun and pleasant sense of humor. John was (and still is) a wonderful friend and will be deeply missed.

God surround your family in this time of sorrow ! The love always goes on and there is no one more full of love than your father ! He was our Bishop years ago. He and your mother are very special people. This world will surely miss his presence !

John was always such a blessed mentor for me. He taught me how to waterski on Bear Lake around 1977. We spent an entire week on the water. I've been able to pass that along to many youth here in the "Lakeland" ward. I'm unable to attend the celebration back home. But I will celebrate John Van Wagoner with a few sets in the evening, when the water is smooth as glass. The spray of the water will hide the tears.

There are just some people that affect you, even after years away. Last Sunday, I found myself knocking on John Van Wagoner's door, who was my bishop when I was 5 years old. Toby Pontious and I were in the neighborhood in a reminiscing mood, and I was thinking about his high fives, bawling when I saw him in my old ward after not seeing him for years, and how he, in my childhood and adulthood, consistently made me feel so loved. Unfortunately, he didn't answer the door.
That evening, we ate dinner with Cassidy Miller Biesinger and the Miller clan, and I asked about him. We weren't sure how he was. This morning, Cass sent me the obituary. He had passed away just 2 days before I knocked on his door.
To the man who taught me--and still teaches me--how to love with a full heart, my real-life Mr. Rogers, I'll be missing you and ever grateful for your prime example.

When I saw his name I had hint that he was a cousin. I investigated and found that John was my distant cousin. We both come through John Halmagh Van Wagoner only through a different wife. I read his obituary and he sounds like he lived a life that honors his ancestors. It is an honor to be his cousin.

I have many fond memories of John, but the most special are when he served as the Executive Secretary when I was the Bishop. Many nights he would entertain and counsel with the young adult members waiting for interviews and he was always there for me when I needed some wise counsel from someone who had already traveled down the road and knew where all the pot holes were.

Bishop Van came up to us the first day we moved into the ward and introduced himself. From that day on he and Kathy were our dear friends. He was a great influence on our children and continued to ask about them. Getting a hug from Bishop Van always made me go away happy because I was able to visit with him. May comfort and love be with your family. Diana & Scott

John was the best neighbor a family could ask for! Always friendly, always positive! We built a pizza oven in our backyard and had some friends over one night. Probably 5-6 young families and their kids. We invited John and another neighbor friend of his, Evan to join us and they stole the show. John was easily one of everyone's favorite guests there and I know many lives were enriched by his presence just that night.
I can only imagine the countless lives he has influenced and blessed in the years he has lived. We love you Brother Van Wagoner! You will be missed!

John Van Wagoner was one of my most favorite people. Such a great example of kindness and goodness! I will always treasure the memories I have of him as I was growing up and the time our families spent together. So grateful for the opportunity to have known him. Wishing your family peace and comfort in the knowledge that he is rubbing shoulders with Kathy and those who have gone ahead and boating in the great beyond!

Bishop Van was a true friend and example. While he served the Lord and us in the 23rd, we all knew that he loved us. And we loved him. I'll miss you my friend, but please tell Katy hi for me. We miss her too.

Almost every week during harvest I would come home from work to find a bag of produce grown by John (even after we moved from the neighborhood). He was the most amazing neighbor and friend. My kids loved to hear the stories about his days as a kid crossing the gravel road (7th N) with his gun in hand and coming home with many pheasants (i think the # grew each time he told the story!) He was constantly proclaiming love for his sweet wife and making sure everyone knew she was the smartest, most quick-witted, talented and beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. He will be so missed. I was blessed to have known this amazing man!

I moved to American Fork and attended high school there my junior and senior year. John was one of the special friends during those years. He was always so fun to be around with his big smile and pleasant personality. Kathleen was my roommate for one year at BYU. Those two people are friends that bless your life in unique ways and make you realize you were greatly blessed by their friendship.
