We cannot be sad at John's passing as we know his election is made sure, now reunited with beautiful Alma. John was a great man, fantastic missionary and wonderful friend and we are greatful we were able to meet again in 2003 when we visited the United States.

I was honored to first become acquainted with John P. Fugal in June 1980 when I entered the MTC. He was serving as President of the Dan Jones 3 Branch at that time, and I will never forget his kind encouragement and cheer as I struggled to learn the Japanese language. "Let's see those 4-SYL hands raised high," he would say to us each week (Speak Your Language, a rating of 4 meant that you'd done your best to speak only in your mission language that week).
Just over two years later, in Fall 1982, I got reacquainted with Pres. Fugal when I enrolled in his Religion 420 Book of Mormon class at BYU. His testimony and love of the Lord, of the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon and all who came into his classroom was ever evident in his gentle words and testimony. He was one of the tallest men I have ever known, but his true stature is measured in his love of God and all of his fellow creatures.
Thank you, President John Paul Fugal. Your example will shine throughout all eternity.

One of my favorite opportunities was to take dad to BYU Religion faculty parties. Dad was always glad to point you out as one of his "Tiny" friends!. Thanks for being such a good example--someone who we can look up to in more than one way! I think, although I don't know for sure, that you must be a gentle giant too!

I got to take dad's classes too. Years later, after being away for a few years, I had the opportunity to sit in one of his classes again. It was amazing! I had forgotten how good he was! I am glad to say that I was raised by "goodly parents".

Hope you all can remember the good times and truly celebrate his life! Prayers for all of you and thinking of you. Wish I could have made it there for the funeral but know I am thinking of you. May the Lord's blessing be with you.

I was a freshman at BYU in 1974. As I sat in my Book of Mormon class, I wondered what would my teacher be like. When Brother Fugal walked in the classroom, I immediately felt the Spirit with him. I learned so much from him that I even made sure that I had him for the 2nd half. His teaching and testimonies help set me on a path that led to a firm testimony of the Book of Mormon. Thank you, Brother Fugal.

I'm so grateful to Dr. Fugal. Many years ago, in the early 70s, he became a mentor to my husband, Del, at a critical time in his life. My husband met Dr. Fugal when he got into his religion classes. Dr. Fugal was also instrumental in my husband being able to go to Israel with one of the early Study Abroad groups. After his mission and we were married he hired us to grade his quiz and test papers. He is a great man and will be missed. He was a positive influence for a great many people. My condolences to the Fugal family at this time.

Grandpa Fugal was able to make everyone want to be better simply because he believed they were better. He called me "Joygirl" and I have always striven to live up to that. I was always excited to go to Grandpa's house and hear his stories, his laugh and just be there with all the family. I miss you Grandpa!

We're all going to miss Grandpa. I remember when my brother passed when I was 8 the only thing that kept me going with hope was knowing Grandpa was coming home from a mission soon and we could see him soon. He was just like the Grandpa's in the story books, always smiling that twinkling smile, always ready for a bug hug, always bringing some goodies like home-grown apples or berries,or some tool he thought my family might need. Every act was to say he loved us.
I miss you Grandpa!

The one thing I'll always remember about John, Elma, Pam and Deborah, and the rest of the family was how kind they were to whoever came into their home. I grew up with Deborah and I know her death must of been hard. I live in Texas and it was hard for me, but with the knowledge we have I'm sure he's doing what he loves most and that's teaching . I hope his family can find peace in that.
My prayers will be you.

John and Elma were my neighbors in Pleasant Grove, Utah while I was growing up. We were in the Grove Ward. I worked with him on a number of church callings and meetings providing the operation of Sound Equipment and Film Projection in those days.
He was a kind and gentle man. One I enjoyed immensely
I also had several occasions to tend his children. They were an active bunch and were a bit too much for Girls to handle. But we had some good times together, and made them mind me. Good times good memories. My best to all of you
Wish I could be there, but My wife and I are on a Church Mission.

One thing we will remember John for is that when we went on trips he would always hold his hat high in there air for a place for us to gather together. He certainly was active in his older years and was always a joy to be around. I'm sure he will now be happy to be with his wife. I'll look forward to seeing him when I get to the other side. I hope your family will have sweet memories that will comfort you at this time.

What a cherished time I had with him & Elma while touring the Holy Land and Rome, Italy. Never does an Easter or Christmas go by that I remember our time together there. He had a great and riveting personality and charisma. I have never forgotten the powerful testimony he gave of the Savior in the Sacrament meeting we had in Israel. He was and is truly a stalwart pioneer and a saint. Heaven's gain and our temporarily loss for now--until we meet once again. Peace I give and leave unto you.
