What a dear and gentle man! I had the privilege to be a student at AF Jr. High when he was principal, to be a member of his LDS Ward and Stake when he served as Patriarch, and to serve with him in the American Legion. He was always kind, gentle, courteous, and patriotic. Because of his concern for the welfare of the young people at the junior high, he asked my dad to volunteer at the school as a drug counselor—to warn us all of the dangers of drugs and to counsel with those who had already experimented. I remember one time when some young men “helped” a young lady from our school into the creek that ran along the east side of the school grounds, and his talk with all the boys at our school that afternoon about the potential dangers associated with getting a girl wet when she might be undergoing her “time of the month”: he was firm, yet kind and soft-spoken, and we all “got the message”. I’ll never forget the way he handled the situation, and I don’t recall a “repeat performance” at the creek thereafter. His love of country resulted in patriotic-themed awards for our school, including (I believe) one called the Valley Forge award, and he was a great sponsor and supporter of the Junior Patriots singing group that represented our school around the State of Utah. Later, he would work with me and others to help put together oratorical contests about the Nation, sponsored by the American Legion, for the youth in our community. He was friendly, approachable, and pleasant to be around. I love him and his dear family; and I wish Marylou and their children the very best. May you be comforted in your loss; and may you realize the amazing impact that Doug had on so many of us!

Dear Nicholes Family,
My heart is so sad for all of you. I consider myself one of the luckiest girls that went to school in American Fork because I got to have the greatest principal twice! Once at Forbes and once at Barratt. Most children fear their orincipal, how can you fear a man who smiles warmly at you and greets you by name?! And just like many other children in this town I would line up at Mary Pulley's waiting to see Santa, he knew my name, my parents and even my teacher at school! Even as the years pass, he still would greet me with a warm smile and always knew my name. Mr. Nicholes is a wonderful man and I will always fondly think of him when I say his name. Thank you for sharing him with so many of us. May peace and blessings be with you. Sincerely, Tara Carnesecca King

We moved to American Fork in the fall of 1984. I had two children at Barratt, and two toddlers. We didn't have any family in Utah and were just getting to know people. I took my kids to Mary Pulley hill to see Santa. When Santa walked up to our car he called each of my four children by name. I was stunned. I finally found out a few months later that it was Mr Nicholes. He is one of the finest men I have ever known. .

Dear Marylou, and Family, we share our Sympathy with all of you at this time of grief. A wonderful man he is.... helped so many of us to see the value of being kind and gracious to every one you meet. We both had Uncle Doug as our 6th Grade Teacher at the old high school on the hill, then turned into the American Fork, Jr. High, as the high school moved over to 6th East...your Father Douglas got us started off right... may the Peace of Our Savior, Jesus Christ Surround you with the Love, more than you've never known before
and you'll always remember, Families can be together forever ! Love, Carol & Tom
