Obituary of Fred Thornton Wright
Together Again
Fred Thornton Wright (1924–2015) completed his life of work and service March 26, 2015. Born and raised in American Fork, Utah, the son of Fredrick Earl Wright and Mary Ann Thornton. Fred attended BYU, UCLA and UW. He served in the Army Air Corps in the U.S. and European theaters during WWII, in flight operations as a weather officer and air traffic control officer. Fred returned to Utah in 1951 and was employed as an analyst by US Geneva Steel.
He was involved in politics on the American Fork Planning Commission, the American Fork Hospital Board, as State Republican Chairman and a National Committee Member.
Fred served as an LDS Bishop, Stake High Councilman, and as a missionary in the Philippines with his sweetheart, Doris. His hobbies included: classical music, amateur radio (W7TEE), astronomy and gardening.
He is survived by his 7 children: Cathy (Steve) Cochran; Connie Staley; Lewis (Lynne); Wayne (Marianne); Elizabeth; Margaret Vail (Matt Cooper); Ruth (Jared) Kissell. Fred and Doris were married for 63 years and have 29 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A gentle giant of a man who will be greatly missed.
The funeral will be held Friday, April 3 at 2:00 pm in the American Fork Central Stake Center, 320 North 100 East, American Fork. Viewings will be held at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, Thursday, April 2, 6:00-8:00 pm; and on Friday, April 3, 12:45-1:45 pm, also at American Fork Central Stake Center.
