I was stunned to hear of Mrs. Bird's passing. Noting Donna Altes a wonderful former teacher of mine all those years back 1975-1976 in 9th grade, Richard Niemann who taught me how to respect and truly honor others to any capacity in 7th grade 1973-1974 also my very 1st period homeroom teacher and many years later both our physical sailing life ships meeting side by side once again for a very brief time at a local Napa fitness center. I used to be and was extraordinarily immature during those very early years towards my mentors and fellow alumni in all grade levels built like a stairwell below and above. but truly love you all this day all these decades later mixed in with real appreciation and deep abiding thankfulness as now I do know that I was blessed by God to know all of you then my former mentors and friends many decades past. I think much of Mrs. Bird rubbed off on all of you not realizing it then as an adolescent. Although I never had her as my teacher at Silverado, during those very difficult and challenging transition years, I recall very vividly seeing her in the halls and various places in and around that school. She always had a beautiful smile, a very warm welcoming laugh. I do know truthfully when I saw her then I always observed her bright smile and never a frown and regretfully never introducing myself due in a large part because of my shyness, insecurities, and lack of self esteem to change with the other students although many like myself also were then I firmly know now then we were indeed all equal. Like the bible states:
When we were once children,
we played as a child and did childish things
Now that we are adults,
it is time to put away things as a child, and do no more childish things.
When President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated during a motorcade in downtown Dallas Texas on that ill-fated November afternoon of the 22nd of 1963. A well known poet who remarked and I placed in my own late mother's hands in repose when she went home to be with the lord in 1998, is again fitting perfectly from the age of JFK's passing and my beloved mother's to Mrs. Bird is as follows:
The morning after death,
is but a temporary parting of the heart and love shattered.
We would want to carefully sweep up the many pieces
and not use them again until eternity.
God truly bless all who knew her all those decades together ago as well as today, and my offering from my heart to truly thank all of those faculty members who also did and still do in the physical and memory as well of my honor and privilege of knowing in return all of you, and my personal misfortune of missing out on the one among us all back then so very special, I did not. Life's roads take us all down a very different journey and path. Mine and Mrs. Bird's never crossed in a large way, but the thinner path I took then struck me by the gentle breeze of just seeing her then only crossing my eyes, and lightly brushed my mind. and like the dust blown in that breeze like all of you also, it permanently settled and left indelible and priceless memories on my heart, and those like scratches in the fine wood grain of a lovely piece of hand crafted furniture wanting never to be removed.

Richard Niemann
Doris was amazing. She loved her students, her colleagues and the opportunity to teach. She inspired all of us with her kind and happy spirit. I first met Doris at Siverado Junior High School in September of 1971. They were days of war, social protest, and a gap between generations. Challenging days for teachers. For us at Silverado, they were very good days never to be forgotten and always to be cherished.
"Through the door came familiar laughter
I saw your face I heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts our dreams are still the same"
"Those were the days my friend"

This lady was one of my all-time favorite teachers at Silverado Junior High School. One day I went to the office and asked to be tested for GAT just so I could be in her class (I made it). I loved the trips we took together and the joy that she made learning in her class. Every year I ran for some class office and never won. She knew that I was the one who actually wanted to do the job (and not just win the election) and she would find ways to involve me wherever she could. I'm glad I had the chance several years ago to let her know what she meant to me during those years. I wish I had taken the time to visit her before she passed. She was an amazing woman who left an amazing legacy to an enormous amount of people. I consider myself one of the lucky ones who was blessed to have known her and been her student.
Andrea Hart McGlothlin What a lovely tribute!!!
Lee Ann Reinders Dietz Dave, Thanks for letting us all know. I loved Mrs. Bird too. I fondly remember reading Romeo and Juliet in her GAT English class (formerly MGM - mentally gifted minors/monkeys).
Lee Ann Reinders Dietz Also remember, she had a fondness for Robert Redford!!!

Noel Brinkerhoff Mrs. Bird was my ninth grade teacher. 2 memories come to mind: her love of Robert Redford and her always telling me i was a real person. It wasn't til i got older that i could appreciate her compliment. She was one of the good ones.
Bonnie Broxton Doris was amazing -- she will be missed -- loved her!
Esther Botello Lane Another great teacher! I'm sorry to hear of her passing.
Paul Dybedal One of the great ones ... So sorry.
David Lent she was so special, so much enthusiasm. beautiful words from you, donna. i think she would like that.
Dave Avanzino So sad to hear that. I heard she was living down south here and I was hoping to track her down for a visit. One of the best teachers I ever had.
Christian Sakellariou She was a great teacher, and a great human being!
John D. Maher Did not have her as a teacher but she knew me without being in her class. She was that kind of a teacher. She taught all the kids, even in the hallways. What a legacy she leaves.
Laura McDoniels Waight You and Mrs. Bird will forever be linked in my mind and heart, Mrs. Altes. Most of my fond Silverado memories involve the two of you. I actually never had Mrs. Bird as a teacher, but that didn't matter to her. She was all welcoming and all loving.

From the moment we met 60 years ago, we were best friends. We traveled the world together and a great deal of the United States. We shared both the good and the bad times. My family adored her and she loved them back. We were both teachers, her English, me drama, and we loved teenagers and our profession. She was the best person I knew. Doris knew how to live and how to love. She was passionate about books, food, travel, friends and family. All who knew her, including me, were enriched. Travel on, Doris!

Doris was a phenomenon... the mold was broken when she was born.... full of life, love, excitement, exploration, a zest for all people and a love of them all. As Joan Hahn's son once shared, "Wherever Doris is planted, she will sprout"... She brought humor, erudite conversation, color... to all who surrounded her. Doris Hollindrake Bird was a superb English teacher, friend, mother, advocate for the underdog, world traveler, gourmand (she taught me how to enjoy FOOD!), and everyone's friend. Doris is up in Heaven right now, making everyone laugh and tip-toe through the tulips. We will miss you, Doris... I can't even imagine this world without you HERE....
With lots of love,
Donna Ruth

Doris was my mentor at Napa High School 26 years ago.
She became my friend, confidante, and a second mom to me as I journeyed through life's many paths.
We used to go to the Santa Rosa County Fair many summers and I remember how she loved the floral exhibits. We would eat so much food, sharing bites from each other's plates, then see the rodeo or a concert. She even rode the Zipper with me and we laughed like hyennas.
She was a special lady, an exuberant teacher, and an awesome friend and mother.
Doris, you will forever be in my heart,
Jenny Valassopoulos

No one could have had a better aunt. She always looked for the best in all of us and loved with all her heart. She had a spirit of adventure and fun. I loved talking about books with her... Kind of our own little book club. But most of all she made me always feel good about myself. I will miss her optimism and approach to life. Such a strong woman. I love you Aunt Doris.

From the moment I stepped into her class my freshman year, she has always been a mentor, mother, and inspiration. As some of you may know, she is an integral part of my "Red Wheelbarrow" story I have been sharing with my English classes at Napa High School for the past 25 years. I have 2 pictures of you that I cherish each and every day I teach in B-1. As you all know, we are all so fortunate to have been blessed having this angel in our lives.
