Obituary of Cheryl ann Mikesell Olsen
Cheryl Ann Mikesell Olsen passed away on November 30, 2015 in Provo, Utah. Cheryl was born on February 13, 1955 to Betty Jean Walser (Mikesell) and Robert Edwin Mikesell in Provo, Utah. At 5 years of age, Cheryl became a resident at the Utah State Developmental Center in American Fork Utah. Cheryl was diagnosed with mental retardation due to PKU obtained at birth, causing the brain disorder she lived with for the remainder of her life. She lived at USDC where she met her lifelong best friend and roommate, Karen Crowder. Cheryl lived at USDC until September 2010, when she moved into a group home located in Orem Utah, run by TURN Community Services. Cheryl developed a very special bond and close friendship with her roommate Karen, who lived with her at USDC and then moved with her to their home in Orem. They were kindred spirits and despite the fact that neither of them could talk, you could feel of their love and devotion to each other. It was a bond much like that of sisters.
Cheryl loved science fiction and you would often see her perk up when a sci-fi movie or show was on television. She enjoyed relaxing in the comfort of her recliner. Cheryl was a fighter. Even though she was non-verbal for the most part, if she was mad at you, she would let you know. She had a few “colorful” words she would blurt out if the occasion called for it. As her health declined over the past several years, there were numerous times we thought it was her time to go. Cheryl would rally and fight back and surprise us each time.
This past year, Cheryl’s health declined dramatically and she needed additional medical care. In December 2014, Cheryl moved to Provo Nursing and Rehab where she could get the medical attention she needed. It was here, that Cheryl spent her last days.
Cheryl is survived by her sister Karen Livingston, her roommate Karen Crowder, housemates Utana Lee and Chrissy Davis, many friends and staff who cared and loved her very much.
