Obituary of  Clem slade hancock

Clem Slade Hancock, 92, died Sunday, April 17, 2016, in the Central Utah Veteran’s Home in Payson, Utah. He was born on Oct. 28, 1923, to Slade Cyrus and Marie Church Hancock in Panguitch, Utah, one of four children. He married Adell Olsen on Christmas Day in 1947. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple a week later in January 1948. They had four children. She died in 1985. He married Ione Tippetts in 1987. He was a musician, often playing in dance bands, and a teacher and an insurance salesman. He loved playing the trumpet and trained with some of the world’s foremost trumpet players. He graduated from Panguitch High School, attended Dixie Jr. College and graduated from BYU in 1950 with a degree in music. For a time, he sold McNess health and food products, delivered dry cleaning and did odd jobs. A year after graduation, he was invited to take over the high school music program in Lyman, Wyo., after which he taught music and directed award-winning marching bands and orchestra programs for 20 years from Roberts, Idaho, to Sugar City and Rigby to Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls. Later, he sold insurance for BMA, Aetna and Robert Hansen, Inc. His life was defined early on when his father died helping restore electrical power in a winter blizzard, leaving behind his widow and four small children, including Clem, who was 5. He was drafted at 18 and served in New Delhi, Calcutta and Shabataha, driving the Burma-China road to deliver explosives. He was a technical sergeant. He has lived in Idaho Falls, Billings, the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City, Taylorsville and Payson. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing with and directing the Idaho Falls Symphony and singing with the Jay Welch Chorale. During his final years, he served fellow veterans by playing Taps at their services. He is survived by his wife and brother, Hal Hancock; his children: Lynn Slade Hancock (Anne-Marie), Sharon Adell Haddock (Marc), Bryan Christopher Hancock (Patty), and Darrell Olsen Hancock (Rebecca); stepchildren: Dale Tippetts (Bobbie), Sharon Stanger (Dallas), Carl Tippetts (Michelle), Brent Tippetts (Jill); 15 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; 43 step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren. His sisters, Artoise Griffiths and Alta Excell, preceded him in death as did a step-granddaughter, Carli Jean Daley. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family will hold a family service at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 23 at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 E. 100 North, American Fork, with a viewing at 9:45 a.m. He will be interred in the American Fork City Cemetery.
