Obituary of Wendy Carol Slayton McCarty

Wendy Carol Slayton McCarty Wendy Carol Slayton McCarty, age 60, passed away on April 18, 2016 at the Heritage Care Center in American Fork, UT. Born November 3, 1955 to Wayland Finch and Wanda Adele McIntosh Slayton in West Chester, PA. She was the youngest of five girls and was raised a Quaker in Tanguy Homesteads – a cooperative community in Pennsylvania. The family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and then to Miami, Florida. In the 8th grade Wendy started harp lessons and realized she had talent and love for the harp. Wendy graduated from Olivet College, Olivet, Michigan in 1976 with a degree in Music. She married Patrick David Leitch in 1976. She then earned a Masters in Nurse Midwifery degree from Yale University in 1984. She worked as a Nurse Midwife for many years in Miami, FL. Wendy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1990. Wendy and Patrick lost their home to Hurricane Andrew in 1992. She divorced her husband and moved to Utah in 1997, where she lived with her sister Judy Shefchik. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1997 and met Brian McCarty at a Single Adult Fireside. They were married February 2, 2000. They were sealed in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple in 2011. Multiple Sclerosis continued to ravage her body until she required nursing home care in 2009. At the time of her death, she was totally disabled, and yearning to be free of her body. She has now been joyfully greeted by many relatives who enjoy the blessings of Temple Ordinances because of Wendy's hard work in Family History. Wendy is survived by four sisters: Nancy Slayton of Fairbanks, AK, Judy Shefchik of Provo, UT, Rebecca Slayton of Seattle, WA, and Bonnie Shelton of Midlothian, VA, 12 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews, who live all over the country. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. The family wishes to thank nurses and staff at Heritage Care Center for the years of loving care they gave to Wendy. Funeral Services will be held Thursday April 28, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Anderson and Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, Utah. Viewing will be from 9:00 to 9:45 prior to services.
