My Grandma Virginia went to my choir concerts when I was in high school, including my concert as a member of the Northern California Honor Choir in Sacramento. Though my Grandma Virginia tended towards kindness, if she told you that you had talent Kathryn, you probably did. She would listen to music when I was over at my grandparents' house on Saturdays in my youth as she would curl her hair the day before church each week.

Aunt Virginia had a love for music. She inspired the young people in her life to love music as well. I remember one day when she was doing something in the kitchen at the Brigham City house and I sat down to the piano and played a random combination of chords that I had learned as though it was a great concert. She came in from the kitchen and told me how lovely it was… It was nothing more than my young thespian self imagining being a concert pianist but Aunt Virginia made me feel, in that moment, like I could do anything.
