Obituary of Florence Hurst Wendel
Florence Hurst Wendel, age 97, passed away November 24, 2016 in her home
Florence was born April 12, 1919 in El Paso Texas to Roy Angus and Mildred Theresa Call Hurst. She married Clarence John Wendel on January 30, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed away on December 8, 1969.
Florence graduated from BYU in 1940 at the age of 21. After graduation she taught Home Economics and English in the Juarez Stake Academy in Mexico where her parents had gone to school. In 1941 she signed a contract to teach in the Utah Uintah School District where she met Clarence. After they were married she stayed home to raise her family. She started teaching school again in 1968 and taught until she retired in 1984.
Florence was a faithful member of the LDS Church and served as a Primary President, Primary teacher, Relief Society President, teacher in Relief Society and a Gospel Doctrine teacher. She really enjoyed teaching Gospel Doctrine. She served in the South Carolina Columbia Mission from Sep 1984 to June 1985, when she broke her ankle she had to come home. On the day she was released from her mission she was called to work in the extraction center. She worked there for 11 years recording information from microfilm. Florence also worked in the American Fork LDS Temple from Aug 1997-Nov 2001. She was a Visiting Teacher up until the time she passed away.
Florence loved to sew and cook and taught these skills to her daughters. She spent her life taking care of others and in her later years found it very hard to accept that it was now our turn to take care of her. She is loved by many and will be truly missed.
In her personal history she wrote, “The Lord has been so good to me. I have a wonderful family. I have the gospel. …. Life has been good.”
We are especially grateful for all who assisted in her care, especially her Hospice Nurse Paula, who was one of her students in Spanish Fork. They became very good friends. She was very appreciative for all you did for her.
She is survived by 3 daughters and one son. Renee (Karl) Robinson, Bonnie (David) Daniels, Roy (Cindy) Wendel, Jolina (Tom) Smuin; 27 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren, siblings: Mildred (Grant) Maw, Daniel Earl Hurst, and Betty (Vernon) Carlson. She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence, daughter Mildred Yorke, son John Mark Wendel, great granddaughter Colette Eliza Chadwick and brother Roy Joseph Hurst.
