Obituary of William Shelton

William “Bud” E. Shelton 1919-2017 William “Bud” Elwood Shelton passed away and was reunited with his beloved wife on March 28, 2017. Bud’s life was a perfect example of selfless service and loving devotion to family. Bud was born in Murray, Utah on January 12, 1919, to John William Shelton and Catherine Singleton Sager. He had two sisters. He married his sweetheart Bessie Judd Downs on August 2, 1939 and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake temple. Bud served his country in the Navy during WWII and was stationed in the Pacific. He worked as a miner, a mechanic, and a millwright at Geneva Steel. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints and served in many callings, including scout master. He was continually engaged in silent acts of service to those around him. Bud was happiest when he was outdoors. He spent countless days in American Fork Canyon exploring, camping, fishing, and hunting. He had a true green thumb and grew delicious food and beautiful flowers to share with his neighbors. He loved sports of all kinds and served as President of the American Fork Beehive little league. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. Bud and Bessie traveled the world together. He was a master storyteller and a prankster. He had a special whistle he used to calm babies and pithy one-liners to make the room erupt in laughter. Generous and supportive of his friends and family in all of their endeavors, he will be missed. Bud is survived by his children Carol (Lee) Doyle, Dean (Ann) Shelton, and Rex (Linda) Shelton, daughters-in-law Cyndy Shelton and Jan Shelton, 20 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Bessie, son Niel D. Shelton, a granddaughter, a great grandson, and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 3 at 11 am at the American Fork 4th Ward Chapel, 455 E. 300 N. Friends and family may call at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 am prior to the services. Interment will be at American Fork Cemetery.
