Obituary of Nancy Makin
Nancy Makin (beloved daughter, sister, aunt & friend) passed away on April 27, 2017. She is the daughter of Ernest LeRoy and LaVerle Neves Makin. Born on March 19, 1947 in the American Fork Hospital, she lived most of her life in Pleasant Grove.
After High School, Nancy attended Southern Utah University where she graduated with a BS degree in Elementary Education & Instructional Media. During both High School & College, she enjoyed actively participating in Drama; starring in plays and painting scenery.
Fondly known as “Teacher Nancy”, she was a gifted teacher. She loved children. The students she taught & tutored ranged in age from pre-school to Jr. High. Her unique style of teaching was high energy, expressive & interactive. She taught many students how to read using a phonics based reading program she developed. She also liked to teach with objects. Clever sayings or concepts were taught with each object. Nancy truly believed the more senses used, the greater the learning. During her lessons she made sure every student knew how important, smart & valued they were.
Nancy was a devoted member of the LDS Church. Throughout her life she avidly taught & reinforced gospel principles. She served an LDS mission In Alberta-Saskatchewan, Canada serving the native american people. After her mission she served in various callings. However, she mostly served in Primary. (Many, many years in Primary.)
Nancy had a generous & giving heart. Visitors would never leave her home without something in their hands (a treat or small toy with a meaningful thought). Children at church would search for Nancy to receive a fun “teaching trinket" from her bag. When working in a sandwich shop near the Grand Canyon, she wished the owners would allow her to put more meat in sandwiches for the hungry tourists.
Nancy is survived by her brothers Arden (Lyda) Makin, Carl (Tamera) Makin and sister Ardith (Lawrence) Higley. Along with many nieces and nephews and brother-in-law Kenneth Gray. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Linda.
